Carnlough House – New Contemporary Bespoke Home Overlooking the Sea
Client Aspirations
"To create a unique home for their young growing family that would provide for their needs now and into the future." The clients sought to maximise coastal vistas whilst maintaining privacy within a small settlement.
Challenges
The site presented multiple constraints: location in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, steep topography, clustering amongst adjacent dwellings, integration of sustainable technologies and achieving abundant natural illumination through expansive glazing.
Design Response
The architects conceived an inverted-plan residence featuring an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area fully glazed to capture sea vistas. The design includes five en-suite bedrooms, double garage with office, playroom and study. "The house is wrapped around an enclosed external courtyard on the approach side creating a sense of arrival." Reclaimed basalt stone from demolished structures demonstrates environmental sensitivity.
