Gortscreagan House - New Modern Family Home in rural County Derry
Client Aspirations
Client wished for a family home and garage with a rural bespoke contemporary style. Provision of natural light was important and client preferred large areas of glazing to maximise the view from the site.
Challenges
Site located in rural countryside within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) on a farm; required minimising potential impact on landscape character and appearance; integration of new dwelling in countryside context.
Design Response
Sustainable dwelling designed to integrate with immediate area character and existing buildings. Contemporary modern building implements vernacular architecture emphasising natural sustainable materials and building traditions. Designed as traditional linear, storey and a half barn type building. Materials include natural local stone, timber cladding and slate roof. Accommodation comprises open plan kitchen/dining/living space, utility area, separate lounge, playroom, five ensuite bedrooms, main bathroom, covered external patio area and garage with games/entertainment room.
