Redcastle House Donegal - Bespoke Reconfiguration and Extension of Coastal Home
Client Aspirations
The clients sought to renovate an existing bungalow on an elevated site with panoramic views over Lough Foyle. They desired "an entire upgrade the entire building including reconfiguring rooms, extending and enhancing the views and natural light." Smart technology and heat recovery systems were important priorities.
Challenges
Rural site in County Donegal; steep terrain; integration with the locality
Design Response
The architects created a contemporary design that combines "glass frontage with minimal use of vertical members to ensure uninterrupted views over Lough Foyle." The scheme incorporates "corrugated panel cladding" – referencing local agricultural vernacular – whilst achieving Passive-Haus standards through modern materials and methods. The design features open-plan living spaces, dual fireplaces and covered exterior areas for year-round usability.
