School Hill House - Bespoke Contemporary Modern House Design in Northern Ireland
Client Aspirations
"2 storey dwelling with a contemporary modern design with rural/rustic characteristics and an attached garage." The client prioritised natural light, capturing views and desired "the kitchen was to be the heart of the home."
Challenges
Located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the site presented steep terrain, the need to maintain established planning permission validity and sensitive integration with its context.
Design Response
The design responds to the dramatic Sallagh Brae cliffs through a composition of four distinguishable blocks with varied mono-pitch roofs, linked by a flat-roof spine. The dwelling is "bedded into the site" with the lower ground floor sunken into terrain. Natural stone walls and slate roofing reflect traditional rural vernacular, creating "a sense of solidity and presence" that echoes the surrounding rock formations.
