Mayo House - Bespoke Extension to Coastal Home in County Mayo
Client Aspirations
"To create a bespoke long term home allowing for the growth of a young family." The owners sought an oceanside residence honouring the location's heritage – the 1940s Land Commission cottage formerly housed islanders – creating a welcoming, modest retreat that embraces renewable energy and ocean views.
Challenges
"Very exposed site as subject to extreme weather; 100m from cliff edge with Atlantic ocean; within an area of special interest lowland coastal zone." Integration with context and maximising vistas whilst respecting environmental constraints were key considerations.
Design Response
A single-storey glazed link distinguishes the original cottage from the new extension, preserving the cottage's legibility. The design features a stair descending to a lower ground floor integrated into the site and an elevated upper ground level capturing seaward outlooks. New spaces include living, dining, kitchen, playroom, master bedroom suite and two additional bedrooms across two storeys.
