Sallagh Brae House – Sustainable Contemporary Passive House New Build
Client Aspirations
"A replacement sustainable contemporary dwelling with elements of Passivhaus standards" that maximises views of surrounding mountains, coastline and countryside. The client sought a fully integrated house within the landscape, finished with contemporary rural aesthetics – concrete interiors and stone cladding externally.
Challenges
The site sits within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and nature conservation area on steep terrain, requiring sensitive integration with the locality.
Design Response
A sustainable dwelling built into the landform with a grass roof and basalt rock cladding, designed to blend invisibly into the landscape. The design incorporates large glazed areas for energy efficiency and views, Passivhaus and Carbon Lite principles, excellent airtightness, insulation, solar gain optimisation and superior indoor air quality. Accommodation comprises open-plan living, four ensuite bedrooms, fitness facilities with swim spa, four-car garage, and external amenities including a lakeside swimming area.
